Fort Collins, Colorado – February 23, 2010 – At the Fort Collins City Council meeting on Tuesday, February 2, Mayor Doug Hutchinson presented Ann Rohr, president of Weston Distance Learning Inc., with the city’s Character In Action Award. The mayor thanked Weston for the “generosity, decisiveness and enthusiasm” that makes the company a positive, friendly place to work and a strong community booster.
The monthly Character In Action Award is sponsored by Character Fort Collins, an organization whose mandate is to support and promote the demonstration of good character in the community. Each month, the organization chooses a Character In Action winner from nominees submitted by local residents. A nominee can be an individual, a group or a business.
In his Character In Action proclamation, Mayor Hutchinson stated that Weston “goes the extra mile to ensure that employees are happy and engaged in the community.” He acknowledged Weston employees for working 700 community-volunteer hours in 2009, and he noted that the company itself donates to several local charities.
Weston grants each employee four hours of paid leave per calendar year for volunteer work. The company also matches, up to $5,000 annually, employee contributions to charity drives. Through volunteer participation and/or financial assistance, Weston supports the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life event, Larimer County’s Partners Mentoring Youth program, the Support our Troops drive, the Salvation Army, Secret Santas for the Elderly (at Clare Bridge Assisted Living Facility), Crossroads Safehouse, Habitat for Humanity, the Girl Scouts and the Boy Scouts.
Weston is also a strong advocate of staff wellness and camaraderie. It hosts a 12-week summer Lifestyle Challenge that encourages employees to increase physical activity and improve eating habits. This month, the company is launching a year-long lunchtime-learning series; each monthly session will feature a discussion of a specific character trait. The company also sponsors events such as a summer picnic, a holiday party, a chili cook-off, a jack-o-lantern carving contest and Wear Your Pajamas to Work Day.
