Fort Collins, Colorado –April 23, 2010 –At-Home Professions medical transcription graduate Kathy Medley is her school’s DETC Outstanding Graduate for 2010. Kathy is featured in the recently published 2010 DETC Outstanding Graduates and Famous Alumni booklet. The Distance Education and Training Council (DETC), a nationally recognized accrediting agency for distance education institutions, publishes the annual booklet to showcase top performers from its member schools.
At-Home Professions (AHP) chose Kathy as its Outstanding Graduate based on these criteria: course GPA (97%), professional competence (demonstrated by her advanced-level job duties), professional persistence (in landing her first client) and business success (evidenced by her many job opportunities). These accomplishments make her a role model for AHP students everywhere.
After getting laid off from a corporate job, Kathy enrolled in AHP’s medical transcription course in November, 2004. Having become the linchpin in the care of elderly relatives as well as the after-school care provider for her grandchildren, Kathy needed work flexibility. After completing the course in eight months, she launched a focused employment campaign. A three-month search resulted in her first opportunity: vacation back-up for the transcription staff at a surgery office. Now, she’s an established subcontractor for a local transcription service, preparing reports for more than 20 doctor clients. In her four years with the service, her job duties have grown: She edits other transcriptionists’ work, trains new transcriptionists and is the featured transcriptionist when the service prepares sample reports for a potential client. By networking at the service, Kathy found her other steady client, a local orthopedic surgery office. She’s now turning away transcription opportunities.
Kathy’s job blends well with her many sandwich-generation duties. Regarding the mobility of her medical transcription work, she says, “This is absolutely perfect for me.” During her mother’s recent hospitalization, Kathy took her laptop to the hospital and prepared reports at bedside. Flexible work hours also allow her to attend her grandchildren’s school events. In a recent communication to AHP, she wrote, “For me, what I have received from AHP is exactly what I needed when I needed it …. The beauty of having my training is that when the time is right, I will be able to expand my business any way I want to.”
At-Home Professions is operated by Weston Distance Learning Inc. (Fort Collins, Colorado), which also operates two other distance-education schools: McKinley College and U.S. Career Institute.
